Description

A Step, or stepping is a form of percussive dance that many Greek organizations have in which the individual's body is used as an instrument to produce rhythms and sounds through a mixture and variety of steps, claps, and spoken word. Stepping can be distinguished from strolling from its little to minimal dancing, as well as that any sound comes from the individual's bodies instead of a soundtrack.

Etymology

Stepping has its beginnings in the mid-1900s in competitive schoolyard song and dance rituals in historically Black fraternities and sororities as a link to African tribal-dance. Over time, other cultural fraternities and sororities also adopted the tradition of stepping.
